What is the difference between a “Relaxation Massage” and a “Remedial Massage” that incorporates relaxation massage techniques?
Many Remedial Massage sessions will actually begin with some
Swedish relaxation massage techniques applied to warm up the area to be
treated. Some may even be primarily based around Swedish relaxation massage
techniques. However, please note that there is a big difference between a
Remedial Massage where Swedish relaxation massage techniques are employed, and
a pure Swedish relaxation massage. The primary difference is the goal and
reason for applying the techniques.
A Remedial massage, by nature, must be
sought out to treat a specific medical complaint or physical dysfunction. In
some cases, such as in cases of anxiety, depression or other mood disorders,
relaxation techniques may be the most effective to treat the dysfunction and
achieve the desired goal. In contrast, a Swedish relaxation massage is
generally where relaxation techniques are applied to the exclusion of all other
techniques, and purely to induce a state of relaxation and subsequent feeling
of wellbeing for the client. Here are some other characteristics of Relaxation
versus Remedial Massage:
·
Relaxation
massage will generally not focus on any one specific area of the body – the
therapist may identify problem tension areas but will generally not focus too
intensely on these.
·
It’s
quite common for a full body relaxation treatment be performed in 60 minutes,
as compared to a Remedial massage where 60 minutes is usually only enough
time for two or three body areas to be treated. For
